Ghostwriter Syrah Santa Cruz 2016

"We kind of fell into making a Syrah. For years, I’ve walked through the 1/3 of an acre Syrah block at Smith Road while looking at our Pinot Noir, but I wasn’t overly interested in making Syrah. In 2014, I made a deal with Steve Remde, the owner to take the fruit for that year and graft the vines over to something else in 2015. That was our plan until the Syrah turned out so well, becoming one of our favorite wines from the 2014 vintage. So now, the Ghostwriter makes a small production of Santa Cruz Syrah. The 2016 was fermented 100% whole cluster, no destemming without added yeast then aged in a combination of French barrels and puncheons for 19 months. This Syrah is light, peppery, really flavored without being at all heavy or alcoholic."
