Niepoort Colheita Port, Portugal 2009
Niepoort is a family business dating back to 1842. Its winemaking tradition began in the Douro region, with the production of Port wine. Know-how, enthusiasm and an innovative mindset have been passed down from generation to generation, making Niepoort one of the most authentic and notable Portuguese wine producers.
The Dão and the Douro are the most important regions as far as red Portuguese table wine is concerned. Douro wines tend to be a bit fuller and fleshier than their Dão counterparts, which are generally lighter and higher in acidity. Reds from both regions are dense, rustic, and well-balanced. They also show their terroir quite clearly, and represent a great alternative to the modern fruit-driven style.
Colheita Ports are Tawnies which come from a single vintage and are aged in 550 L old barrels for a minimum period of 7 years prior to bottling. This wine is a delicious way to end off a meal and also matches very well with desserts, dried fruit or as an aperitif served with foie gras.
