Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc, Rhone, France 2022
In the Northern Rhône, the Chave family is considered winemaking royalty. The family boasts a continuous lineage of winemakers who have tilled the granitic soils of Hermitage hill dating back to 1481. The current 16th-generation vigneron is Jean-Louis Chave, whose cerebral, confident, yet understated style has “propelled Chave wines to status among the world’s most sought-after collectibles,”
Few who cherish the power and perfume of classically made Hermitage would argue that the greatest red and white examples emerge from the Chave family cellars. The current generations in charge, father Gérard and son Jean-Louis, use their knowledge, experience and spread of lieux-dits to craft wines that combine all the power, longevity, nuance and refinement that the Hermitage hill is capable of.
" I continue to think that this estate makes one of the greatest white wines in the world. Looking at the 2022 Hermitage Blanc, it was harvested starting on the 23rd of August and is still resting in a mix of barrel and tank. I was able to taste through multiple lieux-dits, all of which were impressive, with the Péléat bringing the power and opulence and Les Rocoules and L'Ermite bringing more structure and precision. This will be a full-bodied, deep, concentrated wine that will have decades of life. In a time when many refuse to take any risks and are abandoning any hope of true greatness in wine, it's such a relief to have a producer like this continue to make concentrated, powerful, utterly classic and singular wines. Bravo." Jeb Dunnuck 96-98+
