Anthill Farms Peugh Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, USA 2021

VINTAGE : 2021

COUNTRY : USA

REGION/APPELLATION : California, Sonoma, Russian River Valley

VARIETALS : Chardonnay

Gold-green in color. Expressive, spicy aromas of lemon oil, apple, and wet stone. Generous aromatics of fruit and textural appeal on the palate are focused by the lively Peugh acidity. There is an exceptionally long-lasting finish of orchard fruit, savory almond, and sea salt, showcasing all the depth and complexity of these 75-year-old vines. Compelling and delicious texture and tension that will continue to evolve for a dozen years.

Peugh Vineyard, located in the middle of the Russian River Valley, has head-trained Chardonnay vines, something rarely seen for this variety. This is normally used on crazy, rocky soils with Syrah, Grenache or Mourvedre, but not Chardonnay. The reason this happened is the vines were planted in the early 1940s when California growers had no idea what they were doing. The result today is that this unique Chardonnay is produced from some of the oldest vines in the entire state.

The 2021 Chardonnay Peugh Vineyard, from vines originally planted in 1887 and grafted to Chardonnay in 1944, is pure and energetic. It has soft aromas of hazelnut, toasted meringue, iodine and Meyer lemon. The light-bodied palate balances tangy acidity with a creamy, mouth-coating texture and lemon-cream flavors, and it has a long, focused finish streaked with saline character. - Erin Brooks Wine Advocate 94
