Marine Layer Rose of Pinot Noir 2019
VINTAGE : 2019
COUNTRY : USA
REGION/APPELLATION : California, Sonoma Coast
Perched high up and out in the Fort-Ross Seaview AVA, this vineyard is the epitome of the far West Sonoma Coast with giant coastal redwoods, saline air, and ever-present fog. The soils are Goldridge series - the decomposition of an ancient sandstone seabed. Goldridge is not fertile, nor does it hold water very well, forcing the vines to struggle. That struggle naturally limits yields and pushes the fruit quality to the max.
The rows of vines for Carina are all young vines explicitly farmed with the intention for Rosé. It was meticulously farmed and picked early for optimal ripeness.
Fruit harvested by hand at night/first light on September 19th at 21 Brix. Whole cluster direct to press, after which the juice chilled and settled overnight. We then racked to four neutral barrels for a slow fermentation, which lasted through the end of November. After primary fermentation, the wine went through complete malolactic conversion over the next three months while on the lees. Finally, the assemblage spent its last months in stainless steel until bottled in June 2020. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Bright, fresh, and energetic, Carina Rosé is generous and expressive with satsuma citrus, blood orange, wild strawberry, and rose petal.
