Marine Layer Chardonnay Charles Heintz Vineyard 2018
VINTAGE : 2018
COUNTRY : USA
REGION/APPELLATION : California, Sonoma Coast
VARIETALS : Chardonnay
VINEYARD : Charles Heintz Vineyard
Located in the Green Valley sub-AVA, Charles Heintz Vineyard is just outside of the town of Occidental. Two ridges in, and only about 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Heintz has become one of the most famous Chardonnay sites in California. The Chardonnay from this vineyard develops slowly as foggy, cool evenings slow down ripening significantly, especially at the end of the season. The soil is a classic sandy Goldridge loam. The resulting wines are prized for their layers of flavor and incredible depth, yet they also retain beautiful structural elements.
Owner and grower, Charlie Heintz’s family has farmed this land for over 100 years. Charlie’s grandparents purchased the property in 1912 and grew Zinfandel until the Prohibition era. The vineyards were replaced with apple orchards until 1982 when they replanted most of the acreage to Chardonnay.
Fruit harvested by hand at night on October 5th. Whole cluster direct to press, after which the juice chilled and settled overnight. Racked to Damy barrels, 40% new oak. Spontaneous/native fermentation in barrel over 10-14 days. The wine undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel with gentle lees stirring throughout the spring. Wine ages for 14 months until gently racked off of lees and the blend assembled. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Pale yellow with tinges of gold. Aromatics of white peach, marzipan, white flower blossom, and beeswax followed with undertones of thyme and marjoram. Mouthfeel is expansive and coating without being overly weighty and a fresh line of acidity and energized long finish.
