Domaine Jean Foillard Beaujolais-Villages 2018
VINTAGE : 2018
COUNTRY : France
REGION/APPELLATION : Beaujolais-Villages
VARIETALS : Gamay
Jean Foillard's reputation as a founding member of the Gang of Four and his now decades long excellence in Morgon and Fleurie ensure that his Cru Beaujolais offerings from Morgon and Fleurie sell out almost instantly. How pleasant it is then to now have a gift from Jean, something we can open more often and with greater abandon: his U.S. exclusive bottling of Beaujolais-Villages!
Jean makes his B-V with similar attention to detail that the Crus get but with a shorter elevage to preserve freshness. The farming is organic with native yeast fermentation and only a homeopathic level of S02 added to stabilize. The vines are about 40 years old on average and are scattered around the granitic hillside villages of Northern Beaujolais: Villié-Morgon, Lancié, Saint-Amour, and Sainte-Etienne-la-Varenne. Foillard owns and farms about half the vines with the other half farmed to his organic specifications. The wine ages about seven months in concrete tank.
Pop the cork and you'll find something delicious and imminently drinkable. You'll think there was a hole in the bottle.
