Domaine Bernard-Bonin Meursault Clos du Cromin, Cote de Beaune, France 2022

It’s not every day you hear about a young domaine in Burgundy whose wines have, relatively quickly, reached the acclaim of the area’s most historic producers. Bernard Bonin has been in operation for fewer than 30 years, and their biodynamic wines have achieved elite status alongside those of Coche Dury and Domaine Roulot.

Véronique Bernard and her husband, Nicolas Bonin have developed with a cult-like following for their biodynamic artisinal and terroir-driven wines from sites in Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, since the domaines founding in 1998.  Veronique took over the winery formerly known as Michelot Mère et Fille, including six hectares from her parents (Her father was the owner of Domaine Michelot). Another 2 hectares were added through a gift from her Aunt. The domaine is dedicated almost exclusively to Chardonnay and all the fruit is harvested by hand. The wines are aged in oak barrels for 15–18 months, and each barrel is tasted individually to determine the optimum exchange between wine and lees, then the wines are bottled in synchronization with the lunar calendar.

The wines are bottled in synchronization with the lunar calendar, and never on a leaf day. The long barrel aging process allows for fully dry wines below 1g/L of residual sugar. The wines continue to mature in the bottle, and the results carry the characteristics of the finest wines of Meursault: exquisitely fresh, rich, mineral, and vibrant.

South-southeast facing parcel, at the border of Volnay-Santenots. Clos du Cromin was planted to red grapes until 1971, when the Bonin family replanted the site to Chardonnay. A 10-hectare lieu-dit that was once a stone quarry. Bonin's plot is at the upper-slope of the vineyard with a thinner top-soil. This is the first site harvested. South/southeast exposure. Aged on the lees for 18 months in 228L oak, 10% new. Unfined and unfiltered.
